Indianapolis nursing home abuse has become more common as the elderly population steadily increases and more people become nursing home residents. Governmental bodies such as the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services help regulate nursing homes across the country, while uniform standards have been established by federal and state governments to help ensure the safety and well-being of patients.
Although these agencies do much to protect residents, over one million are subjected to nursing home abuse every year. The abuse can be a single incident or a recurring event and involve either negligence or active abuse. Malnutrition, dehydration, bed sores, over-sedation, poor medical care, gangrene, aspiration pneumonia, or physical harm caused by a fall can all constitute nursing home abuse. Less obvious signs of abuse include lack of supervision, abandonment, theft, sexual assault, coercion, and physical or mental abuse.
The victim has a right to damages if any of these things happen while they are a nursing home resident. Through litigation, the nursing home may lose its certification as a penalty for failing to provide the expected care. This lack of certification can lead to a loss of federal funding.
